This
concert presented the world premiere of 'Songs of the Coromandel Coast',
a highly original and accessible choral work by India-based composer Chris
Williams. This new work, for tenor, children's choir, chorus and orchestra,
celebrates recovery after the catastrophic Asian tsunami of 2004. 'Songs
of the Coromandel Coast' is a sequel to Williams' earlier moving Tsunami
Requiem. This piece, composed immediately after the disaster, was also performed,
along with two popular works from the classical repertoire, featuring two
of the UK's leading soloists. All profits from the concert went to the international
children's charity, Plan, to fund post-tsunami support in Sri Lanka.
